Buy the Diamond and Ring in the Same Place
The things you want to protect here are your investment, and your sanity. Buying at the same place protects both.
If you buy a diamond online for instance, and take it to a local jeweler to set it, you will run into problems.
Two main reasons to buy at one place are ::
- A diamond can be chipped when it is set by a jeweler. The jeweler must use a LOT of pressure to push the metal tight over teh edge of the diamond. And that edge, the girdle, is the diamond’s weakest point. If you buy from someone else, the jeweler setting it will not guarantee or replace it if he chips it. Ask, they will tell you so. This is actually reasonable to me as a businessman, because the expense of the diamond is far too great when all you are buying from him is the setting. Imagine the heartache, and financial hardship, if your diamond is chipped, and you cannot afford to get it replaced.
- A jeweler that does both, can make sure the purchase makes the best sense for you. Some diamond sizes and shapes do not match certain settings well enough to make them look right, and to make the diamond safe in the setting. The jeweler selling the diamond and the setting will make sure they match well.
