I am so glad you asked that question, which I will answer in three parts. We have spent many months, not to mention an enormous amount of money and energy, to answer just this question for all diamond hunters.

  1. Read my first three diamond tutorials to learn how to compare quality.
This is exactly the purpose of my diamond tutorials, which will guide you effortlessly through all of the complex decisions as quickly and accurately as possible. Start here :: Four C’s Diamond Tutorial.
It is important to remember that knowing the 4 Cs is not enough to compare one stone with another. You will also need to consider other crucial details such as depth percentage, table percentage, fluorescence, etc., which all greatly affect the brilliance and fire in a diamond. These details are taught in my Beyond the Four C’s Diamond Tutorial.
  2. Next, be sure you compare stones with the SAME lab reports.
Never compare different lab reports. Compare GIA with GIA only, and AGS with AGS only, and EGL-USA with EGL-USA only. That is the only way you can compare apples to apples. And even then, be sure you are getting stones that are truly comparable. That is a skill you might have to ask trustworthy jewelers to help you with, since no two diamonds are EXACTLY alike enough to compare head to head with a little adjusting.
  3. Next, read the diamond pricing tutorial to learn how to compare prices.
You will need to compare prices on the diamonds that meet your quality parameters. This is very complex, requiring adjustments for at least 13 quality factors. Use our pricing tutorial page to calculate a good price for your diamond. If your dealer’s price is higher than the price you find online, negotiate. Local stores need to charge a little more, but not a lot.
